<p>En un momento en que Internet ofrece numerosas opciones no siempre basadas en conceptos apropiadamente validados presentados por profesionales que a veces no tienen antecedentes claros, el odontólogo recibe una imagen confusa de la profesión. Cada vez es más difícil determinar lo que está bien y lo que constituye un error profesional. Es evidente que esa educación en línea, que a veces tiene ventajas indiscutibles, conlleva el peligro de distribuir criterios terapéuticos que quizá no tengan fundamentos científicos y que, por consiguiente, hasta llegan a ser dañinos para el paciente.</p>
<p>Dados estos hechos, uno puede preguntarse cuál es el papel del libro de texto cuando todo es tan accesible a través de los medios electrónicos. Es obvio que el libro sigue siendo una fuente de información única en su género, que contiene un criterio de tratamiento basado en la evidencia científica y no en la prueba y el error o la preferencia personal. Periodontología Clínica e Implantología Odontológica siempre ha destacado el enfoque terapéutico basado en la evidencia.</p>
<p>El libro se originó en Escandinavia y documentó diversos procedimientos terapéuticos con datos de la investigación científica. En los últimos años, hubo una participación internacional de autores, lo que llevó a la difusión del libro en todo el mundo. En la cuarta edición se incorporaron ciertos aspectos de la odontología con implantes y, mientras se preparaba la quinta edición, la odontología implantaria se convirtió en una parte importante de la periodontología clínica.
